The Director

Shawn Sandvig

Shawn Sandvig has enjoyed playing drums, percussion and directed music for most of his life.

He was born and raised in Tacoma Washington. His music career started at age 12 playing the drums just like his Dad. He learned from his father who was a drummer in local big bands in Tacoma area in the 1930’s.

Shawn played drums and percussion at Mason Junior High School and later at Wilson High School where he played drums and percussion in their Concert and Stage Band. He was also mentored and studied under his band directors Doug Sorensen and Dale Strickland where he was taught conducting, Concert and Jazz studies. He graduated in the class of 1984.

He worked at Wilson High School running the auditorium maintaining lighting and sound for the school and out side groups he also helped with the Music Department  and continued to learn from Dale Strickland from 1984-1987.

He went to South Kitsap High School and helped with the Band from 1987-1988.

In 1990, He ran Sound and became the Choir Director of the First Free Methodist Church from 1990-1999. In 1992, he played Drums and Percussion for the Seattle Pacific University Jazz Ensemble.

In 1999 he ran sound for Abundant Life Fellowship Church. On occasion he would sing and play the drums. 1999-2007.

He has played in the Cascade Community Band for which he played drums and occasionally conducted them from 4/2007 -2008. He Started the Cascade Community Combo in June 2007. It grew to the Pierce County Community Big Band (now TPC Jazz) in which he is the director and drummer.

In 2011-2018 he was the Director of the Jazz Ensemble 2 at Graham Kapowsin High School and 2012-2014 was the Director of the Jazz Ensemble 2 at Bethel High School

Shawn is very passionate about music and enjoys working with others to share his love, be it with Christian, Jazz or Big Band music.
